Learning the “Ugly” Result of an STD

Over the past week in the Teaching Career class we have studied the topic of sexuality, teen pregnancy, and STD’s. We learned many facts that will help us make better choices as young adults.  These choices will aid us in solidifying our future goals.STD photo

As advanced students we have the opportunity to teach a weekly class. Last week we implemented a lesson based on the STD’s epidemic. The materials used in this lesson were; rock salt, blocks of ice, and food coloring. We started off by randomly placing a few pinches of salt on the ice. The ice represented the human body, while the salt represented unprotected sexual activity.  We then sporadically dropped a few drops of food coloring, (red, blue, yellow, and orange.) Within increments of five minutes we added more rock salt and food coloring.

The objective of this lesson was to create a visual representation of what an untreated STD’s can do to your body over a period of time. The final product; was black water and decayed blocks of ice. This product represented a body infected with an untreated STD. This ended perfectly because the black water represented the “ugly result” of having unprotected sex with multiple partners, and the different exchanges of bodily fluids.

Heifer International

Have you heard of Heifer International?  No?  Well here it goes…Heifer International is a wonderful organization that helps different families and communities in third world countries.  This semester “Teaching Careers” has a mission…and it involves you!  We have selected this organization to donate to as a means to support their cause.  One of the locations we have chosen to donate to, is in numerous countries in Africa, where, irrigation pumps are being laid, we decided to support this effort when we found out that girls in many countries are being sexually attacked when they are sent to get water for their family. In addition, we decided to purchase and send a flock of chickens to Ghana, to help a family learn to become self-sufficient. The whole premise of; if you give a man a fish, he can eat for the day, but, if you teach a man to fish, he eats everyday – this premise really supported our desire to give and to quote Ghandi – to be a part of the change we wish to see in the world.

During the month of October we will be selling Daffy Apples. If you pre-order the apples, the cost is $1.00, per apple. However, after the apples arrive and you still want to buy one, they will be $1.25. We deeply appreciate all the financial support we can get, and all the extra money earned will go to support Heifer International.  You can purchase Daffy Apples from anybody in Teaching Careers, or you can swing by room 111 and order or buy them there.  PLEASE SUPPORT OUR CAUSE!  We would love to sell hundreds of apples and to see all your handsome faces!
