There is a new face in the Counseling Office this year who has joined the CEC family to provide support to our students through a special program called GEAR Up.
Candice Neverve has been with DPS for three years and is responsible for working with students at Lake International Middle School and CEC.
GEAR Up is an acronym, which stands for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness in Undergraduate Programs. It is a nation-wide program supported by the U.S. Department of Education. The GEAR-Up grant program is designed to increase the number of students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education. The DPS GEAR-Up program is unique in that school counselors were hired to follow a cohort of students in the 2017 and 2018 graduating classes from the time they were 6th/7th grade students through their senior year in high school/freshmen year in college. This is the 3rd year of GEAR-Up and the program serves five middle schools (Bryant-Webster, Centennial, Lake, Skinner, and TreVista) and three high schools (CEC, Lincoln, and North).
The program offers guidance to students by providing 2 college visits per year, parent/family workshop opportunities, higher education exploration, academic support/tutoring, mentoring, education around types of colleges, group counseling, and much, much more.
Please introduce yourself to Ms. Neverve and welcome her to CEC if you haven’t already. She will be working at CEC on Mondays, Tuesdays and alternating Fridays.
