The schools each receive a grant award to support continued academic achievement, as well as a banner, which they can proudly display.

A partnership of five private Colorado foundations comprises Foundations for Great Schools: The Anschutz Foundation, Daniels Fund, Fox Family Foundation, Gates Family Foundation, and Piton Foundation. The group collectively selects annual award winners from among a 12-school district area based on a variety of factors, including academic performance and growth, percentage of students qualifying for the Federal free and reduced lunch program, school leadership, culture, and instructional effectiveness.
A total of 12 public district-run and public charter schools, along with two public charter management organizations from Aurora, Brighton, Denver, Littleton, and Jefferson County received awards for 2013.
“It is inspiring to be able to recognize and reward these schools that are doing a fantastic job for their students. Despite whatever challenges they might face, these schools are achieving very strong results in academic growth and performance, and the strategies they are taking to achieve that success deserve to be recognized,” said Tom Kaesemeyer, Executive Director of the Fox Family Foundation and spokesperson for Foundations for Great Schools.
In announcing its award winning schools, Foundations for Great Schools also identified common success strategies found among them for raising academic performance and student growth. Common success strategies reported by the winning Denver schools include a strong focus on school culture as well as data-driven instruction, among others.
